Battle Studies (2009) Jujur, pertama kali denger, gw agak kecewa sama album ini. I’m not saying that this is a terrible album, but felt like it was a step-back from what he has done for Continuum. But after thorough listening, I kinda fell in love with this album hahaha Well sure it’s not as marvelous as Continuum, but it’s not BS’ fault that Continuum was too big to beat, right? After all, Battle Studies is a superb album too. It’s different, but still great. Mungkin untuk pertama kalinya, John bener2 memberikan sebuah tema untuk albumya. Dan tema untuk Battle Studies adalah: broken heart and how to deal with it. Bahkan Battle Studies punya icon sendiri. Ada salah satu opini fans di twitter yang menyebutkan: “Battle Studies is so up and down. Feels like drowning and being saved over and over again” And I’m completely agree with that. Heartbreak Warfare Single keduanya ini membuat terobosan baru sebagai video klip pertama yang dirilis dengan metode augmented reality. Bisa diliat di websitenya, jadi video nya ngebuat yang nonton bisa jadi background dengan cara pake webcam. Gw susah ngejelasinnya sih, harus dicoba sendiri. Ada sedikit konten politik dalam videonya, walaupun lagu ini sebenarnya tentang patah hati. Best bit: I don’t care if we don’t sleep at all tonight / Let’s just just fix this whole thing now / I swear to God we’re going to get it right / If you put your weapon down All We Ever Do Is Say Goodbye A chill song with a great lyric. Capek gak sih gw harus berulang kali memuji John karena talentanya menulis lirik yang luar biasa smart? Bercerita tentang penerimaan seseorang bahwa ini adalah waktu untuk move-on setelah patah hati. Best bit: I bought a ticket on a plane / And by the time it landed, you were gone again / I love you more than songs can say / But I can’t keep running after yesterday Half Of My Heart (w/ Taylor Swift) Untuk pertama kalinya dalam sejarah album John Mayer, akhirnya ia memutuskan untuk berkolaborasi dengan artis lain untuk ditampilkan ke dalam albumnya. Walaupun porsi Swift disini sebenarnya hanya menjadi backing vocal, tapi sepertinya lagu ini jadi agak sedikit bernyawa dengan suara manis Swift. Ini adalah lagu pertama yang gw denger dan lagu pertama yang gw suka dari album ini. Tells about a person who never really loved a woman with his whole heart. Great hooks, like it. Best bit: I was made to believe I’d never love somebody else / Made a plan, stay the man who can only love himself / Llonely was the song I sang, ‘til the day you came / Showing me another way and all that my love can bring Who Says The first single from this album. Sekilas tampak sangat sederhana dan agak provokatif dengan kata2 stoned (high) nya. Tapi dibalik simplicity ini, lagu ini ternyata memiliki atmosfir yang peaceful dan pesan yang kuat. Menurut gw, lagu ini sebenernya seperti ungkapan sarkasme tentang hanya karena ia sekarang udah jadi musisi terkenal, dia ga bisa bebas ngapa2in. Ini juga menggambarkan tentang freedom and not thinking about what people says. Best bit: Who says I can’t get stoned? / Plan a trip to Japan alone / Doesn’t matter if I even go / Who says I can’t get stoned? Perfectly Lonely The most cheerful from BS, and probably the only one. Dengan irama dan melodi yang enak membuat lagu ini sebenernya agak terlalu nge-pop. But who cares? This song is very uplifting. It shows that its okay to be single, just enjoy it till it lasts, until you find your soulmate. Best bit: And this is not to say there never comes a day / I’ll take my chances and start again / And when I look behind on all my younger times / I’ll have to thank the wrongs that led me to a love so strong Assassin Lagi2 John menulis lagu cinta dengan analogi dan simbol yang unik. Sedikit mengingatkan gw dengan jalan cerita Mr. & Mrs. Smith. Tentang seorang cowok yang dapat dikatakan sebagai love-killer atau womanizer, tapi malah terjebak sama cewek yang juga manizer (?). Things like karma. And the song was beautifully haunting especially the hook part. Menjadi salah satu lagu terbaik album ini dan yang paling menarik perhatian gw. Nicely done! Best bit: Suddenly I’m in over my head and I could hardly breathe / Suddenly I’m floating over her bed and I feel everything / Suddenly I know exactly what I did, but I cannot move a thing / Suddenly I know exactly what I’d done and what it’s gonna mean to me, mean to me / I’m gone.. Crossroads Another cover. This time, its originally came from Cream, Eric Clapton’s band. Sudah menjadi rahasia umum bahwa Clapton adalah salah satu inspirasi dan influence terbesar John dalam berkarya. Cover ini tidak terlalu wah seperti yang John lakukan pada Bold As Love, tapi (karena gw bukan fans lagu2 oldies), cover ini jadi lebih bagus dibandingkan yang asli. Best bit: I went down to the crossroads, tried to flag a ride / I went down to the crossroads, tried to flag a ride / No one seemed to know me, everybody passed me by War Of My Life Menjadi lagu yang cukup sweet. Mungkin hanya lagu ini yang tidak terlalu berhubungan dengan putus cinta. Tapi lagu ini bercerita tentang surviving, which is like one of the points to deal with broken heart. Best bit: Come out Angels / Come out Ghosts / Come out Darkness / Bring everyone you know / I’m not running / I’m not scared / I am waiting and well prepared Edge Of Desire Menjadi lagu terbaik #2 gw dari BS. Irama nya yang mendayu2 sangat bikin ketagihan dengan hooknya yang mantep. Dibandingkan dengan lagu2 lain, lagu ini memiliki bagian solo yang paling bagus menurut gw, bikin merinding. Lagu ini juga yang mungkin paling emosional, entah kenapa setiap chorus bikin goosebumps banget, emosi John paling keluar di lagu ini. Lagu ini ngedeskripsikan tentang nafsu dan obsesi cinta dengan cara yang refreshing. Love the rhyme lyrics too. Best bit: Don’t say a word, just come over and lie here with me / ‘Cause I’m just about to set fire to everything I see / I want you so bad I’ll go back on the things I believe / There I just said it, I’m scared you’ll forget about me Do You Know Me Used to be my least favorite from the album. Gak tau kenapa apakah karena terlalu lambat temponya atau mungkin durasinya yang gak terlalu panjang membuat lagu ini kurang bisa memberi sentuhan yang berarti. Tapi ternyata setelah didenger berulang2 ternyata asik juga. A great tale of first love. Best bit: In all my reverie / I thought I felt us there A feather in my hand, a flower in your hair / Do you know me at all? / Do you know me at all? Friends, Lovers Or Nothing John saved the best for the last. And yes, for me, this song is the best from the pack, my most favorite of them all. Dari awal kita disuguhi dengan melodi piano plus gitar yang asik. Irama nya yang gak terlalu ngebeat tapi gak terlalu mellow juga pas. Seperti judulnya, tentang kebimbangan hubungan antara 2 orang. We’ve been in that kinda situation, right? Well, I have. A great lyrics too. And when you think all the good things from this album is finally over, keep on listening. The last 2 minutes from this song (that makes it the last 2 minutes from the album) were the most memorable and greatest part in BS, and probably from all of his works. Dengan repeated lines nya, ending album ini diakhiri dengan cara yang luar biasa manis. One of the best songs he’s ever written. Tapi dengan inilah kehebatan John terungkap, bahwa ia bisa membuat lagu2 yang sangat sederhana menjadi sebuah karya yang luar biasa. Walaupun permainan gitarnya agak sedikit kurang (bahkan John sempat meminta maaf dan berjanji akan lebih baik di album selanjutnya), tapi dengan kelihaiannya menulis lirik yang pas dan musik yang adiktif mengobati kekecewaan gw di awal. Sebuah album yang simple tapi tetap bersahaja. Sama seperti salah satu pesan dari albumnya, just enjoy it, and you’ll love it like I do. As I said, nothing bad comes from John. He is and will always be a legend. It’s a great pleasure for me living in his era and have a chance to listen to one of the most talented and notable artists of all time. Pengakuan: setelah membuat review ini sambil ngedengerin 1 CD Battle Studies membuat gw semakin jatuh cinta sama album ini.
